Algorithms or Finance?

The HFT offers you an attractive course of study with basic mathematical training and practical applications of mathematical methods.

With us you also have the choice: you can choose to specialize in either Financial and Actuarial Mathematics (business mathematics) or Algorithm Engineering (computer science), thus preparing you for your future career. A wide range of electives gives you the opportunity to further sharpen your individual profile. Students of the study variant Maths² - Work & Study already work in a cooperating company during their studies and can directly deepen what they have learned in practice.

Get free advice on our degree programme. We offer a Digital Student Advisory Service every second Friday. All prospective students can log in via Zoom without obligation and get in direct contact with our professors.

Mathematics

The Study

In the basic studies you will be taught fundamental contents of mathematics and computer science.
You complete the basic studies with the bachelor's preliminary examination.

At the beginning of the main studies, from the third semester, you can choose between our two specializations in order to prepare yourself optimally for your later professional life. The specialization in Financial and Actuarial Mathematics includes additional courses such as Statistics, Operations Research and Business Administration. The specialization Algorithm Engineering deals with the design and concrete application of algorithms as well as their theoretical and experimental analysis.

The study program is supplemented by a practical semester, the so-called Supervised Practical Study Project, in which the previously acquired knowledge is put into practice and deepened. You will carry out the supervised practical study project in a company in Germany or abroad.

Financial and insurance mathematics

Content

  • Evaluation of investment risks, loans and financial products
  • Risk calculation in risk management
  • Valuation of insurance company portfolios and premiums
  • Calculation of insurance premiums

Prospects

The specialisation in financial and actuarial mathematics offers particularly good career prospects in the banking, insurance, management consultancy and IT sectors.

Algorithm Engineering

Content

  • Classical and AI methods for signal and image analysis as they are used e.g. in autonomous driving
  • Creation of virtual environments and animations in 2D and 3D
  • Curve and surface design, classic and computer aided design
  • Geometric algorithms, e.g. for the evaluation and processing of geodata or for digital prototype construction

Prospects

  • Mobility: Driver assistance systems and autonomous driving
  • Industrial production: Digital factory and product planning, robotics, quality assurance, process optimization
  • Management Consultancies: Optimization, data analysis
  • IT industry: Software projects: Management, implementation, quality assurance

Study contents in detail

Basic Study

In the first two semesters, basic mathematics and computer science content is taught. Innovative teaching methods are used and learning is continuously supported by tutorials. The basic studies are completed with the preliminary Bachelor examination.

Semester
1-2

Part 1 of the Main Studies

In the main study period, students take lectures in mathematics and computer science as well as lectures from their chosen specialization. The teaching content, especially in the specialization areas, is constantly adapted to the requirements of professional practice.

Semester
3-4

Supervised Practical Study Project (BPS)

The study program is supplemented by an internship semester, the Supervised Practical Study Project, in which the previously acquired knowledge is put into practice and deepened. The Supervised Practical Study Project is carried out in a company at home or abroad.

Semester
5

Part 2 of the Main Studies

In the 6th semester, in addition to in-depth lectures in mathematics and computer science, lectures from the chosen specialization are also taken.

The final bachelor thesis in the 7th semester contains the processing of an application-related task from the areas of mathematics or the chosen specialization. Due to the good contacts of the Mathematics program with industry and business, a large part of the final theses are written in companies.

Study option Mathe² - Work & Study

As a special feature in the field of mathematics we offer the study variant Maths² - Work & Study. In this form of dual study, you work in a cooperating company from the very beginning and study mathematics in parallel in the Bachelor's degree program. In this way, you can consolidate what you have learned directly in practice and gain your first valuable experience in professional life. You can find more information about this study option on the Maths² - Work & Study page.

Application & admission

The application for the Bachelor's program in Mathematics is done online. Prerequisite for admission is a certificate of general qualification for university entrance, a subject-related higher education entrance qualification, a certificate of entrance qualification for universities of applied sciences or equivalent foreign educational qualifications.

International experience

For students, it is more important than ever to acquire additional qualifications through their own experience abroad during their studies. So they can be abroad

  • either a study semester
  • and/or the supervised practical study project
  • and/or do your thesis there.
