Within the framework of the five fields of design for sustainable development, the HFT Stuttgart uses EMAS (Eco Management and Audit Scheme) as a fixed element of its sustainability strategy. EMAS is the environmental management certification of the European Union and is one of the most important environmental management systems for guaranteeing sustainable business management. Supported by the Ministry for Environment, Climate and Energy of Baden-Württemberg, the HFT Stuttgart started in 2013 in convoy with the universities of Biberach and Heilbronn; in 2014 the universities were registered in the European EMAS register and since then they belong to the 21 pioneer universities (of about 425 universities) in the field of environmental management in Germany.

The coordination of EMAS-related activities is carried out by the university management and the in-house technical department. In addition, all interested university members are invited to become involved in the field of environmental management.

Goals of the HFT Stuttgart

The HFT Stuttgart sees itself as a kind of real laboratory in which all members of the university minimise the daily environmental impact of their activities in order to protect the environment in the long term. The environmental goals that were worked out by the university's environmental committee for the next few years are the starting point for all planned activities for the years 2020 to 2022.

With EMAS the HFT improves its environmental performance by...

  • minimizes their use of resources and increases efficiency,
  • reduces its annualCO2 emissions,
  • reduces their environmental risks and
  • actively involves its stakeholders in this process.

Environmental statement & legal register

The environmental statement describes the environmental management system of the Stuttgart University of Applied Sciences. It provides facts and figures for the evaluation of environmental issues and presents the environmental goals that are defined in the environmental program with ongoing and planned measures for the improvement of environmental protection. The environmental statement is updated annually, validated by a recognized expert and published.

The legal register contains all relevant legal regulations on the subjects of environmental protection, occupational safety, hazardous substances, plant technology and safety, etc. Updates and amendments are regularly recorded and documented, thus providing proof of legal conformity as part of the annual EMAS certification. The legal register is accessible to members of the HFT within the campus network and from outside via a VPN connection.
