The HFT Stuttgart was the first German university to become a member of the International Sustainable Campus Network (ISCN). The ISCN is a global forum for leading colleges, universities and companies to exchange information, ideas and best practices for sustainable operations. The integration of sustainability in research and teaching is also supported. In 2009, the ISCN entered into a partnership with the Global University Leaders Forum (GULF), a World Economic Forum initiative in which the 26 best universities worldwide joined together to develop a Campus Sustainability Charter. This charter distinguishes between three core principles of sustainability, establishes a commitment at the highest level of each institution and sets out the obligation for all members to produce an annual report on sustainability objectives, initiatives and performance. The members represent high-ranking universities from 14 countries in America, Europe, Asia, Africa and Australia. Through its membership in the ISCN, the HFT Stuttgart can network with internationally renowned partners and develop new ways of implementing the improvement of sustainability in campus pilot projects.

In November 2016, ten German universities set out to conduct sustainability-related research in 5 fields of action. The joint project, which is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), comprises five fields of action: reporting, governance, teaching, research and operations. In January 2017, the field of sustainability transfer was added to Verbund via the eleventh university, which is supported by the state of Brandenburg. The university network is supported by a national and international advisory board consisting of relevant actors from the scientific landscape and student sustainability initiatives. In order to serve as an orientation aid for as many other universities as possible, thematic guidelines will be drawn up, in which knowledge already gained, practical examples and case studies will be incorporated.

HOCHN builds on existing research results within the BMBF initiative "Sustainability in Science" (SISI). SISI is part of the BMBF framework programme FONA (Research for Sustainable Development). Innovative dialogue and collaboration methods are used to promote new impulses off the beaten track.
