Last week, 15 students in the Bachelor’s program in Surveying and Geoinformatics at the Stuttgart University of Applied Sciences participated in an intensive course on one of the “premier disciplines” of surveying—geomonitoring.

As well as covering the basics of geomonitoring and providing an overview of a wide range of sensors, etc., there were also practical exercises! Total stations were programmed and, at the end, a monitoring project was launched using the GEO-Monitoring Demonstrator. The monitoring demonstrator consists of railway track models on which deformations can be simulated and measured using various sensors. Once the programmed monitoring measurements had started, the results were analysed and visualised in informative graphs. If predefined movement limits were exceeded, an automatic alert was sent to the students’ email addresses or smartphones.

We were delighted by the students’ keen, committed and creative participation! We would also like to thank Julian Aigner from Amberg Infra 7D AG for his visit and his valuable support during the workshop on the AGMS/GEOvis monitoring system!
