Foreign Languages

Foreign Languages are very important at the HFT Stuttgart! The Centre for Teaching and Learning offers five languages in four different types of courses and three levels. Every semester 75 foreign language courses take place at the HFT Stuttgart.

We offer five different languages: Business English, Chinese, Italian, Japanese and Spanish.

Foreign Language


Yes, registration is necessary for the Wednesday Courses as the number of participants is limited. No registration is required for the language courses in the lecture plan.

The registration for the Wednesday and Intensive Courses is online via LSF.

Yes, attendance is compulsory in all language courses.

No placement test is required for participation in a foreign language course.

Recognition of language services is possible if

  • they aren't older than two years.
  • they have a minimum of 60 hours.
  • level and learning content corresponds to the specifications of the respective course of study.

Languages in the VESPA-Network

VESPA (VErbund für SPrachenAngelegenheiten) is a cooperation between the Stuttgart University of Applied Sciences (HFT Stuttgart), the State Academy of Fine Arts Stuttgart, the Stuttgart Media University and the State University of Music and Performing Arts Stuttgart, with the aim of joint language teaching across all universities.

German as a Foreign Language

Winter Semester 2020/21:

The Intensive Course will take place in the winter semester again online from 15.09. - 08.10.2020 daily from 14:00-17:00.

The following levels are expected to be offered: A1.1, A2.1, A2.2, B1.1, B1.2, B2.1

The German courses take place daily online in a virtual classroon at the appointed time. To participate in the course you will need internet access during this period and a laptop/PC with camera and speakers.

Registration is possible from 01.08. - 23.08. here.

The online assessment must be carried out between 27.08. and 06.09. The access data will be sent after the registration.

Intensive Courses

Summer Semester 2020:

  • German Courses (A1.2 to B2.2.) are being held online from April, 22 to July, 13. 
  • All German Courses are being held on Wednesday afternoon from 2pm until 4.15 pm.
  • Additional Moodle will be used for advising individually and for distributing exercises
  • Exams are provided and monitored using Moodle
  • Digital editions of provided textbooks are being used

In the Summer Semester 2020, a limited number of places in the following Language Courses (PDF) will be offered at the University of Applied Sciences (HFT Stuttgart) and the University of Media via VESPA: Chinese, English, French, Italian, Japanese, Russian and Spanish. Registration from 05.03.-16.03.2020.

Language learning software Speexx

VESPA offers its university members online language courses free of charge. These can be used platform-independently with a browser and an internet connection for self-study. There is also the possibility to take a placement test.

Language levels

  • A1 and A2 for beginners
  • B1.1 and B1.2 for advanced learner
  • B2.1 and B2.2 for advanced learner with very good previous knowledge
  • C1 for experts (English only)

To better assess your level, you can take the integrated placement test (Speexx Placement Test). Please note the system requirements of the provider. After registration you will be asked to test your current language level. After the test you will have access to the full range of courses offered in the chosen language.
