Prof. Michael Bertsch
Specialism: Construction and Design
Michael Bertsch (born in Heilbronn in 1987) studied architecture in Karlsruhe and Stuttgart. After completing his studies, he joined wulf architekten, eventually rising to the position of lead architect. In 2020, he founded BUERO BB with Jakob Bickel, and in 2022, he formed a partnership with Julie Scheffler. The practice undertakes public building projects and combines design with structural, resource-conscious planning and a focus on working conditions. A key area of focus is circular construction using timber, clay and straw; in 2023, he completed further training to become a specialist in clay construction. Since 2021, he has taught at the three architecture schools in Stuttgart. In 2026, he will teach at KIT Karlsruhe in the Chair of Circular Timber Construction and has contributed to the ‘Constructing Domino Zirkular’ project. Key projects include the primary school with sports hall in Wilnsdorf, the sports and events hall in Argenbühl, the documentation centre in Stadtallendorf built from rammed earth, and the IGS Süd pilot project in Frankfurt in collaboration with the Montag Foundation.
