In the completed set-up phase (2017-2021), the iCity research partnership bundled 14 sub-projects - organized in 6 fields of action - and 3 exploratory projects. In addition, there were 2 projects involving local SMEs.

Field of action 1

Sustainable urban development and energetic neighbourhood concepts

In action field 1, strategic concepts for sustainable urban redevelopment for residential quarters as well as for mixed and commercial areas has been developed.

The combination of energetic neighbourhood concepts with planning concepts such as urban land use planning and framework planning for redevelopment made it possible to weigh up the development of renewable energies with questions of monument protection, urban development and social compatibility and led to an integrated approach to urban (re-)development

Blue City: Integrierte Entwicklungsszenarien für ein BUGA Modellquartier 2023 auf der Militärbrache Spinelli Barracks in Mannheim

Project
1.2

Field of action 2

Information platform and urban simulation

In field of action 2, a service-oriented model architecture for solving coupled simulation, optimization and energy management tasks was created. By using the CityGML data model, integrated urban scenarios for energy, acoustics, emissions and microclimate as well as mobility can be calculated for the first time.

Urban acoustics

Project
2.1

Area-wide fine dust modeling in urban areas

Project
2.2

Monitoring and energy planning platform for climate protection managers

Project
2.3

Tools and methods for the simulation of the urban microclimate

Project
2.4

Field of action 3

Energy management, information and communication technologies

The third field of action is an essential integrating research field, as intelligence in the operation of sustainable urban neighborhoods was developed and implemented in predictive control concepts for smart individual buildings or entire commercial sites, as well as for the development of new business models for energy systems.

Smart meters and flexible electricity tariffs - Business models for municipal utilities

Project
3.2

IoT sensor technology, Cloud and Big Data in the field of HVAC systems

Project
3.3

Field of action 4

Innovative buildings and technologies

Field of action 4 spans the range from innovative materials, construction, components and systems to the building and neighborhood structures. The main focus was on requirements in the areas of energy, comfort, sound insulation and acoustics. Also holistic methods such as life cycle assessment (LCA) were used.

Head of FoA 4: Prof. Dr. Berndt Zeitler

Project
4.2

Acoustics of energy-optimized facades

Project
4.3

Field of action 5

Sustainable mobility

The focus of the fifth trade area was on linking convenience and acceptance criteria for the modes of transport of the so-called environmental alliance. Users should be able to choose the mode of transportation that is most advantageous for them individually - without having to provide and organize the service themselves. This favors sharing mobility offers, which also reduce the space required for valuable urban space for stationary traffic.
