Point 7 – Lecture series – Susanne Brorson

Once again this winter semester, the Faculty of Architecture and Design will be holding specialist lectures as part of the Point 7 series. Renowned designers from the fields of architecture, interior design and urban planning have been speaking in the series since 2004.

They discuss their personal approaches, strategies and experiences in project implementation. Their individual perspectives on architectural and built environment issues are also examined. We gain insights into their respective bodies of work and the people behind them.

LESS NEW

This year’s Punkt 7 series is entitled “Less new.”

‘Less new’ does not mean less architecture. It means fewer new builds, less consumption of resources, less grand gesture – and, in return, more attention to what is already there: places, materials, structures, landscapes, stories and social contexts.

The series brings together three contemporary perspectives that engage with the existing built environment in different ways. The focus is on questions of building on existing structures, dealing with the built environment, material integrity and an architecture that does not arise from grand claims, but from precise observation, intelligent interventions and a conscious use of resources.

The next round of talks will be in autumn 2026 with three specialist lectures.

SUSANNE BRORSON | Studio Susanne Brorson, Bergen auf Rügen

‘Island Ecologies’ 12. November 2026, 7 pm

Susanne Brorson, born in Stralsund in 1979, completed her degree in architecture at the Bauhaus University Weimar in 2004, having undertaken study visits to the Berlin University of the Arts, the Politecnico di Milano in Italy and the Bartlett School of Architecture in London. After working in renowned architectural practices in Oslo, London and Berlin, she founded her own, multi-award-winning practice, STUDIO SUSANNE BRORSON, on the Baltic Sea island of Rügen. Her practice’s work is closely linked to her research into vernacular and climate-responsive architecture in the Baltic Sea region. The ‘Eco Village Rügen’ project was awarded the German Design Award in 2022 in the ‘Excellent Architecture, Eco Design’ category, as well as the BDA Prize in 2024, whilst the ‘Experimental House Rügen’ received the BDA Prize in 2021 and the Callwey Award / Best Houses 2024. As early as 2017, Susanne established the teaching programme ‘Baltic Vernacular – An Experimental Laboratory’, which she taught at various schools of architecture and which encompasses design research and full-scale experiments.

Susanne has published and given lectures internationally, and has taught as a visiting professor at various universities, including RISEBA in Riga, HafenCity University in Hamburg, the Università degli Studi RomaTRE in Rome and the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. A key focus of her teaching is experimental design and ‘knowing through making’, through full-scale spatial and material experiments that pursue a regenerative and climate-responsive approach. Her contribution ‘Seasonal Wall Dressing’ was part of the exhibition ‘+/-1 – in search of well-tempered architecture’ in the Slovenian Pavilion at the 18th Venice Architecture Biennale in 2023. Her exhibition ‘Seasonal Spontaneousness’ was shown in 2024 at the Weissenhofwerkstatt in Stuttgart, and in March 2025 at Galleri SPARK in Malmö, Sweden. In 2023/24, Susanne was awarded the German Rome Prize for Architecture by the German Academy Villa Massimo.
