L'Abbaye de Septfontaines

Transformation potential of a cultural heritage

Master's Thesis | Afra Gölzer | 5th Semester | Winter Semester 2025/26

The 'Abbaye de Septfontaines' looks back on almost nine hundred years of history. Since its foundation in the 12th century as a spiritual retreat, it has undergone numerous transformations as a result of changes in use. Now the long tradition of remodelling is being continued: The abbey is opening up as a cultural and social anchor in the rural area. Its original principles - community, hospitality and retreat - respond to the needs of the present. The result is an experimental learning environment in which alternative forms of communal working and living are tested and which favours exchange, concentration and collective production.

Master's thesis supervised by visiting professor Florian Bengert.
