Lecture evening: Climate-friendly Building – Living for the Future

Date:

The lecture will be held on Friday 17 July 2026 a 6 pm at the Historisches Kaufhaus, Münsterplatz 24, 79098 Freiburg im Breisgau

How can we build in a climate-friendly way to ensure our cities have a future? How can we keep housing affordable? How can we strengthen community spirit rather than fostering loneliness? In Freiburg, these issues take on a concrete dimension: LifeLab is planning the region’s first five-storey timber-straw-clay building in the new Kleineschholz neighbourhood. This evening, the construction and housing project will bring these three questions for the future together.

Following the keynote speech by Prof. Dr Hans Joachim Schellnhuber, ‘The Beautiful Transformation’, there will be two short presentations: ‘A Building Concept Full of Solutions’ by Markus Wolf and ‘Working Together for a Sustainable City’ by Prof. Dr Christina Simon-Philipp. The talk “Working Together for a Sustainable City” highlights how cities can be made more liveable, climate-resilient and socially just through collective action. The focus is on new ideas, partnerships and creative spaces in which citizens, local authorities and community initiatives work together to develop sustainable solutions. It becomes clear that urban transformation at neighbourhood level succeeds above all through participation, innovation and local collaboration.

Anyone interested is warmly invited to attend the lecture!
