Visions of an Albert Einstein Discovery Center in Ulm

The 6-week exhibition at the Sparkasse Ulm shows designs for the planned Discovery Center

From 15 February to 31 March, several designs by students of the Master's degree programme in Architecture at the HFT Stuttgart will be exhibited in the Forum of the Sparkasse Ulm. These will provide information on how the future Albert Einstein Discovery Center could be harmoniously integrated into Ulm's cityscape. "We are very pleased that the exhibition can take place in the Forum of the Sparkasse Ulm in the new centre. It is the ideal place to present the results to a broad audience despite Corona - either in the spacious rooms while observing hygiene regulations or from the outside through the window fronts around the Forum," says Nancy Hecker-Denschlag, Chairwoman of the Board of the Albert Einstein Discovery Center Ulm e.V. The visionary Discovery Center not only brings a lot of potential for the science city of Ulm, it is also intended to be an architectural eye-catcher.

There were two attractive locations to choose from for the students' work. The first is the car park next to the listed Ulm theatre. Here, the building could build a bridge between tradition and modernity. The second site is the still derelict railway area on the Blaubeurer Ring. In this area, an urban transformation is already in progress. Both building sites were approved for analysis by building mayor Tim von Winning.

Creative architectural concepts
In Ulm, new buildings are sprouting up everywhere between the traditional houses, combining the modernity of our time with the city's important history. This connection also provided the motto for the architecture students' detailed introduction to the history and municipal politics of Ulm's urban development. Under the close supervision of the two professors Christine Kappei and Rebecca Chestnutt, they were to develop realistic designs for the two plots of land up for selection. In addition to the building designs, detailed plans will also be exhibited in the Sparkassen Forum, providing insights into the potential interior spaces of the Discovery Centre. At the same time, video installations will be shown on screens in which the students explain their designs. Visitors to the exhibition will have the opportunity to vote for their favourite.
