The Interior Architecture Design Programme mourns the death of Prof. Karl Georg Bitterberg

His openness, his cordiality, his caring remain unforgettable.

Karl Georg Bitterberg, as one of the founding professors of the Interior Architecture Design programme, played a major role in shaping and influencing the programme like no other until 2005.

Karl Georg Bitterberg, born in 1941, trained as a carpenter and furniture maker before studying interior design at the Cologne Werkschulen and the Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart. He was particularly influenced by his studies with Prof. Herbert Hirche, one of the last Bauhaus students, in whose studio he worked for several years after his studies. In 1976 he founded his own studio for interior and industrial design together with his wife Ursula Bitterberg-Noßwitz. The focus of the studio's work was on worldwide exhibition installations for the Institute for Foreign Cultural Relations in Stuttgart, international design workshops and furniture developments, including for the office furniture manufacturers VARIO and WINI.

In 1978 Karl Georg Bitterberg was appointed to the University of Applied Sciences for the teaching area of interior architectural design and design furniture and component. As one of the founding professors of the Interior Architecture Design programme, he played a major role in shaping and influencing the course like no other until 2005. The focus was always on the students, whom he challenged and supported with numerous events, competitions, exhibitions and initiatives in addition to his teaching. For this unparalleled commitment, he was awarded the Teaching Prize of the State of Baden-Württemberg in 1997.

In addition to his teaching and professional activities, Karl Georg Bitterberg has always been politically committed to the interests of the interior design profession and the further development of the Interior Architecture Design course. He was active in the Association of German Interior Designers (BDIA), in the Baden-Württemberg Chamber of Architects, in the German Werkbund and in the VDID, the Association of German Industrial Designers. In university politics, he made his mark as the head of the interior architecture design course for decades and as a member of the faculty council, senate and supervisory board of the university.

Karl Georg Bitterberg was a designer, team leader, advocate, trend scout, critic, visionary, analyst and strategist, a carer and promoter, fun-loving and cheerful, to whom cooperation and togetherness were always important. This is how we want to remember him with deep gratitude for everything he did for the Interior Architecture Design programme.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on June 10, 2022, at the Wendlingen Cemetery.

The deep sympathy of the Faculty of Architecture and Design goes to the relatives of Prof. Karl Georg Bitterberg.
