Transformation through innovation

Here's how we can tackle sustainability issues

Tobias Popovic, Professor of Corporate & Sustainable Finance at HFT Stuttgart, talks about innovation ecosystems and how they can help address sustainability challenges.

Smart2Charge

SmartGrid-enabled e-charging infrastructure for rural areas

E-mobility faces very special challenges in rural areas: How can the necessary charging infrastructure be built intelligently and in a forward-looking way with a high level of acceptance and integrated into the existing power grid, which has often grown over several generations? This question is being addressed by the Smart2Charge research project. Smart2Charge is to investigate whether this can be implemented in an economically viable manner and operated with a high level of acceptance in the long term.

HFTMobil: Our mobile exhibition space for teaching, research and transfer

With the HFTMobil, we have created a neutral space that can be used flexibly and in a variety of ways. After several years of planning, interior design students have built a place from scratch within only 3 weeks, in which the university can present itself in public space - whether student projects, term papers, research projects, etc. The HFTMobil is part of the creative space project of the M4_LAB of the HFT Stuttgart within the framework of the federal-state funding initiative "Innovative Hochschule" (Innovative University) and was created under the leadership of the interior design program of the HFT Stuttgart.

Press Briefing

Science Week Smart City

How smart do our cities need to be so that we can make them climate-friendly? How do we succeed in switching to electricity from regenerative energies such as wind, sun and water instead of fossil energies such as coal, natural gas or oil? During the "Smart City Science Week", researchers from the Stuttgart University of Applied Sciences (HFT Stuttgart) presented solutions to the pressing problems facing cities. These include intelligent energy systems and largely CO2-neutral mobility. Researchers from the fields of sustainable urban planning, energy technology, mobility and digitalization emphasized at the press briefing: "The great transformation - the turnaround in the cities - will only succeed if citizens are involved.

Participants in the press talk: Prof. Dr.-Ing. Christina Simon-Philipp Professor of Urban Planning and Urban Development, Head of the Center for Sustainable Urban Development (ZNS), HFT Stuttgart Prof. Dr. Volker Coors Scientific Director of the Institute for Applied Research (IAF), Professor of Computer Science and Geoinformatics, HFT Stuttgart Prof. Dr.-Ing. Lutz Gaspers Prorector Studies and Teaching, Head of Competence Center Mobility and Transport (MoVe), HFT Stuttgart Dr. Dirk Pietruschka Institute Director Center for Sustainable Energy Technology (zafh.net), HFT Stuttgart Moderation: Andreas Eicher, Science Communication, M4_Lab, HFT Stuttgart

Mobility Hackathon 2020

At a VfB Stuttgart home game, around 50,000 fans pour to the stadium. As the Mercedes-Benz Arena is located in the middle of the city, a home game offers the challenges that mega-cities face every day. On 5 and 6 March 2020, the VfB Mobility Hackathon took place at the Mercedes-Benz Arena on this topic. Around 30 participants worked in parallel for two days on 11 challenges around the topic of mobility on VfB home match days. The organiser was the club VfB, while HFT Stuttgart supports the teams as a partner with expert knowledge in mobility research and innovation methods from the hackathon to the implementation of the ideas.

Acceptance Research

Will we soon be flying through the city by air taxi?

On 14 and 15 September 2019, an air taxi flew in a major German city for the first time. This happened as part of the "Vision Smart City" event in front of the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart. HFT Stuttgart was a research partner with Prof. Dr. Patrick Planing from the Business Psychology course. Together with researchers and students from the HFT Stuttgart, Planing investigated customer wishes and requirements for new mobility concepts. The aim of the research project "AirTaxiS" was to learn more about individual acceptance and attitudes towards this new form of transportation. In this video, recorded before the event, Patrick Planing explains his study and talks about what he expects from the event. The subsequent press conference with the results of the study can be found here.

Project: INSOURCE

Analysis and modelling of the food-water-energy nexus

This video shows the 3 case studies of the INSOURCE research project: Ludwigsburg County (DE), New York/Gowanus (USA) and Vienna (A). The team is investigating scenarios for an integratedCO2-neutral and sustainable infrastructure by developing an urban data and modelling framework to help analyse food-water-energy systems and relationships along the nexus.
