Studying mathematics in online format

09.04.2020, by Prof. Dr. Jochen Brunk

Since 23rd of March we have been offering the majority of our courses in online formats. In the Bachelor's degree this was about 80% at the beginning, in the Master's degree already over 90%. At the official start of lectures on 20.04.2020, almost all lectures could be offered online and will also be offered permanently in online format until the final exams at the end of the semester.

All mathematics lectures in the non-mathematics courses of study will also be held in online format for the entire summer semester.

Specifically, the professors offer the mathematics courses as a one hundred percent online model or as a combination of online and offline components.

Model 1: (online model)

  • Courses are held live during regular lecture times as web lectures with GoTo Meeting or other video software
  • Interaction with students via video conference and live chat
  • Lectures are recorded and made available to students via Moodle
  • Live exercises (students work on exercises directly during the lecture period in a web conference)
  • Graphics tablets (e.g. with MS Whiteboard) and document cameras are used as a substitute for blackboards for the step-by-step development of lecture content or for discussing exercises

Model 2: (Online/Offline model)

  • use of Inverted Classroom or CAL (Computer Accompanied Learning) concepts via Moodle:
  • weekly work packages (scripts, accompanying instructional videos, exercises)
  • accompanying online tests
  • online consultation hours of the lecturers via web conference, chat (key facts of the past week, questions)

Both models also use the following innovative method:

  • Sound recording of presentations, recording of lectures offline and provision on Moodle
  • ongoing electronic submission of exercises by students and correction by tutors and staff
  • Tutorials are also held via web conference (e.g. Jitsi) and chats, tutors create exercises and answer questions

In both models, the dubbing of presentations, recording of lectures offline and provision on Moodle is done. Exercises are continuously submitted electronically by students and corrected by tutors and staff. Tutorials are held via web conference (e.g. Jitsi) and chats, tutors create exercises and answer questions.

First-year students are additionally supported by the fact that the module Work Technology is now also offered in online format with content adapted to the current situation.

Teaching quality pact

Within the framework of the quality pact apprenticeship digital teaching media consisting of videos interactive tasks and online tests have been systematically created in the sub-project Engineering Mathematics over the last three years. In this way the basic mathematics lectures could be directly equipped with high-quality accompanying materials for digital teaching. This has greatly facilitated the quick start of the basic mathematics lectures.
