Mobility has become a basic requirement of our life and economic activity. Influenced by climate change, resource scarcity and demographic shifts, it plays a key role in the provision of basic services. The challenges posed by the forthcoming changes require increasingly complex infrastructure concepts and planning processes from local and regional authorities. The construction industry is expected to provide intelligent and innovative construction services in order to effectively and efficiently implement these infrastructural adjustments with and for society in national and international competition.

The Master's programme in Transport Infrastructure Management is addressed to engineers who wish to extend and deepen their knowledge and skills in planning, construction, maintenance, operation and management processes of transport infrastructure.

The economic, technical, construction management and legal components of planning, design, construction, operation and maintenance of transport facilities are teached with interdisciplinary methods. All modes of transport - road, rail, water and air - as well as all forms of mobility from individual transport to public transport are included.

The course contents are taught in a practical and interactive way in small groups, so that everyone has enough time for questions and discussions. By combining courses in blocks, free days are created between attendance phases.

The standard period of study is 3 semesters. The focus in the last semester is on writing a comprehensive Master's thesis. It is possible to start the course of study in the winter term as well as in the summer term.

The graduates receive the degree MASTER OF ENGINEERING (M.Eng.)

Consolidate what you have learned in the fields of traffic planning and design, road construction technology and operation, and traffic development planning.

The module descriptions represent the concrete study contents. You will find the current and complete module descriptions for each semester, including detailed information, in the module handbook.

Key Aspects

Impressionen zu Infrastruktur

The course of studies includes the following main topics:

  • Traffic and spatial planning
  • Settlement structure and mobility development
  • Traffic management / traffic control
  • Monitoring and assessment of road  infrastructure
  • Operation services and maintenance of roads
  • Operation of local public transport / rail transport
  • Operation of airports
  • Inland navigation and ports

This broad spectrum of study contents is taught in a practice-oriented manner at the University of Applied Sciences Stuttgart. Through an intensive exchange with technical authorities, engineering offices and building contractors, they gain practice-oriented insights into operational procedures, planning and financing of projects as well as corporate structures.

Practical Relevance

The principles of the program's "broad spectrum" (various modes of transport) and "depth" (life cycle of transport infrastructures) with a focus on the operation services and development of transport infrastructures are also  guaranteed by external experts from companies (STRABAG AG, SSB AG, DB AG), the public sector (Ministry of Transport Baden-Württemberg, Water and Shipping Authority Stuttgart) and consulting firms as lecturers to achieve high quality education. Due to this personnel connection between science and practice, the course of studies has a great deal of relevance to current tasks, questions and approaches to solutions (e.g. Construction Site 4.0) in the field of traffic/mobility.

An integral part of the course concept are the (day) excursions and professional visits included in the individual modules. These excursions and visits usually take place before or after specific topics and thus provide an additional opportunity to review or deepen what has been learned and to transfer knowledge and experiences from practice to theory or vice versa. In addition, the course of study includes study projects in the first two semesters. With these projects, the Transport Infrastructure Management course offers students the opportunity to apply the basic knowledge they have acquired in their previous courses of study in practice. The main focus is on learning how to organize content and time within a team.

Ein Plan

Working on tasks within a project requires not only sound theoretical knowledge, but also the joint recognition, prioritisation and solution of relevant problems and the ability to find compromises. Furthermore, the project participants should become aware of the interdisciplinary nature of complex planning processes and the broad spectrum of different approaches.

The respective projects regularly refer to concrete questions from practice and are accompanied in their processing not only by the university, but also by project sponsors (special purpose associations, road construction authorities, urban planning offices, etc.).

Stay abroad

Stay abroad

During your studies, the journey abroad is particularly easy and international experience is more in demand than ever before. Dealing with a foreign language, new cultures and new approaches to your subject enrich your personal life experience.

The curriculum does not include a stay abroad orderly. However, the course of studies and the university encourage and support students in planning and implementing their stay abroad. Partner universities are available to students , particularly in the fields of civil engineering, infrastructure management and economic engineering.

Study and examination successes achieved abroad can be accepted with appropriate confirmations.
