Accommodation

The International Student Office (ISO) assists international students in applying for accommodation in residence halls of the Studentenwerk Stuttgart. For this purpose, international students have to enter their data into the online portal of the Studentenwerk Stuttgart and confirm their data entry via the confirmation link in their notification email. Only then the housing application can be registered and processed in due order. After registration students should request the Accommodation Feedback Form from incoming@hft-stuttgart.de, complete the document and send it back by email.

Please note that HFT does not provide on-campus accommodation due to the restricted space of our city center location. Housing is provided by the Studierendenwerk Stuttgart based on availability at dormitories distributed across the city. The minimum rental period is 6 months. Further details can be found in the Accommodation Application Information:

The rent for single rooms in the residence halls of the Studierendenwerk Stuttgart varies between 300 and 400 euros per month, depending on location and room size. Private rooms or individual flats usually cost more. In general, studenst needs about 800 Euros per month to cover their living expenses.

  • Rent: 300 to 400 Euro
  • Health insurance: approx. 90 Euro
  • Semester ticket for public transport: approx. 210 euros for 6 months
  • Food: about 200 Euro
  • Miscellaneous costs: about 150 Euro

Rental of a dormitory room includes furniture, internet access (wireless or per network cable), also bed linen (duvet, pillow, duvet cover, pillow case, sheet) which is supplied for a one time fee by the caretakers of the student residences. Every student residence provides washing machines and tumble dryers which can be used with chipcards.

Due to the very high demand, the average waiting time from the registration to the allocation of a room by the Studierendenwerk Stuttgart can be six months or more!

Buddy Program

You are new in Stuttgart and can't find your way around?

New international students can get a buddy, i.e. an HFT student, to help with the first steps.

Depending on the circumstances of your arrival it may not always be possible for us to arrange a “buddy” in order to pick you up at Stuttgart’s airport (Flughafen) or main station (Hauptbahnhof). In this case, please take the city express train (S-Bahn) to the station „Stadtmitte” and come directly to the International Student Office at the Hochschule für Technik (building 1, third floor, room number 332). When arriving late at night or during the weekend, it might be useful to book a room in a hotel or youth hostel. The International Student Office will be open again on the next working day from at 9 a.m.

New: As of WS 2021/22, international full-time students can also get a buddy in their first semester. You can find more information in our Moodle course.

Welcome to Stuttgart

With our brochure "HFT Welcome to Stuttgart" we would like to simplify your start in Stuttgart. We know that moving to a foreign country is not easy. For foreign students, this means not only finding their way around in the new surroundings, but also adapting to the new way of life and unfamiliar cultural conditions.

For orientation, we recommend that international students read the brochure "Welcome to Stuttgart" carefully already in their home country. Most of the information in this brochure is needed within the first few days in Stuttgart.

Orientation offers for first semester students

We offer various orientation events for our international first-year students - for a good and successful arrival at the university!

Family stays for international students

Year after year at Easter, in the summer and over Christmas, German families open their homes and hearts to a foreign student for two weeks. Guests and families alike experience this intercultural experience as a great personal enrichment.

Accommodation will be with a host family outside the place of study. The choice of location depends on the suitable host family. This offers the opportunity to discover another "corner" of Germany.

The program takes place all year round. Mainly holiday dates are possible. However, individual periods can also be arranged. The program fee is 40 €. All other costs including travel to and from the event (except personal expenses) are covered by the non-profit association Experiment e.V. with the support of the German Foreign Office. Registration is possible until 8 weeks before the desired stay.
