Team coLLab of the HFT Stuttgart wins the student prize in the international competition "Architekturpreis Gebäudeintegrierte Solartechnik 2022"

The prize of 2000 euros, awarded by the Solarenergieförderverein Bayern e. V., went to the team coLLab in the category of university projects.

The team, which already competed very successfully at this year's Solar Decathlon Europe 2021/2022 with their innovatively designed and implemented prototype and received numerous prizes (including first prize in the Engineering & Construction discipline), can now look forward to another award.

The Solarenergieförderverein Bayern e. V. announced this year's "Architekturpreis Gebäudeintegrierte Solartechnik 2022" (Architecture Award for Building-integrated Solar Technology 2022) with the aim of providing impetus for outstanding contributions to the planning and design of building-integrated solar systems and drawing attention to exemplary solutions in sophisticated architecture. Architectural firms, companies in the solar industry and universities were invited to participate in this international competition. 121 entrants from a total of 19 countries took part.
In October 2022, the jury chaired by Prof. Lydia Haack, President of the Bavarian Chamber of Architects, selected the winners from the numerous competition entries, which featured a wide range of different building uses: The "Architekturpreis Gebäudeintegrierte Solartechnik 2022" (Architecture Award for Building-integrated Solar Technology 2022) endowed with 15000 euros, went to the project "Amt für Umwelt und Energie“ (Office for Environment and Energy) in Basel by the architectural firm jessenvollenweider Architektur, and five 2nd prizes were also awarded.
The chairwoman of the jury, Prof. Lydia Haack, was impressed by the projects submitted: "The award-winning works show that solar technology can be integrated into architecture in an exemplary manner with the appropriate design and technical ambitions. They show approaches to solutions, especially in an urban context, that support the necessary expansion of renewable energies, as they also fit into established structures."

Team coLLab wins in the university projects category
In the university projects category, the project by team coLLab from HFT Stuttgart, an innovative and built prototype with which the team competed very successfully at the Solar Decathlon Europe 2021/2022, winning numerous prizes in the process, was able to convince the jury and prevail over another 11 university entries. The jury was unanimous in its selection of the student prize in "appreciation of the overall concept and innovative design of photovoltaics" for this work. Thus, the "Architekturpreis Gebäudeintegrierte Solartechnik 2022" in the category of university projects with a prize money of 2000 euros went to "our" university team! Three other works achieved recognition.

Excerpt from the competition protocol
"The coLLab team from the University of Applied Sciences chose a concept with an open-air area spanning several floors for a location on its own campus in Stuttgart. As a space-creating and design-defining element, for energy generation and as sun protection, the students chose rhombic OPV modules arranged in a filigree cable net on three sides of the building and above the "loggia." While the Novartis Pavilion in Basel uses modules with largely identical dimensions, the dimensions of the planar modules in the coLLab building are determined parametrically and, depending on the exposure and proportion of openings, are also used in different sizes and occupancy densities for good overall performance. The result is a varied OPV dress that creates an effective, multi-layered façade concept in daylight and artificial light in combination with the wooden structure and the climbing plants."

Concept of the project by team coLLab
In addition to the vision of creating a vibrant neighborhood and fostering community through new housing for low-income students and user groups, among others, and through the creation of collaborative spaces such as co-working spaces, community workshops, seminars and a café, one focus was on the sustainability of the building. The energy and façade design took this into account: the façade cladding is made of recycled wood, organic PV (OPV) collectors form the outer building envelope on three sides of the building, the lower part of the façade is greened, and a solar chimney supports natural ventilation.
